The newly rebuilt Moscow Cathedral Mosque was seen illuminated during dawn prayers honouring the Eid al-Adha holiday, in footage captured by drone on Thursday. In the early hours of the morning thousands of worshippers arrived to the Moscow Cathedral Mosque, after Wednesday's inauguration of the building at a ceremony presided over by Russian President Vladimir Putin. Grand Mufti of Russia Ravil Gainutdin held an opening speech which ended the festive prayers on Thursday. The mosque, also known as Moscow Jum'ah Mosque and formerly as Moscow Central Mosque, was demolished four years ago and has been rebuilt to accommodate 10,000 people. After the reopening, held on the eve of Eid al Adha (known in Russia as Kurban Bairam), the temple has become a new complex 20 times larger than its predecessor at 19,000 square meters (204,500 square feet). Muslims make up roughly 14 percent of Russia's population and about 300,000 of them live in Moscow. The new mosque, which will be the seventh in the Russian capital, is expected to help decongest other mosques in the city, which are inundated by the growing Muslim population.
