The condition of a battered and balding Andean bear (or spectacled bear) called Cholita was showing signs of improvement in Lima Tuesday, after being discovered by the Animal Defenders International (ADI) during a raid on a circus in the north of Peru in March. Cholita had her fingers chopped off and her teeth removed by the circus, but is now regaining the confidence to accept food from visitors. With her species usually covered in a thick, black coat, Cholita sadly suffers from severe alopecia, resulting in her bald appearance. The veterinary department of a local Lima zoo provides Cholita with daily medical checks. ADI expects her to soon be flown to the 'Wild Animal Sanctuary' in Colorado, USA.
