Footage captured on Friday shows the dramatic detachment of ice from Planpincieux Glacier on the southern slopes of the Grandes Jorasses in the Mont Blanc massif of the Alps.
Road closures and the evacuation of people at risk were reportedly ordered by the Mayor of Courmayeur when the displacement rate of the glacier began to accelerate in September.
Experts closely monitoring the glacier since 2013 say that the glacier is completely exposed to sunlight and that temperatures are rising.
Reports say a 250,000 cubic metres (8.8 million cubic feet) section of ice is sliding at a rate of 50-60cm (16-23 inches) each day and could collapse at any time. Reportedly, there is no imminent danger to villages in the area.
