One of the most remote Victory Day parades was held above the Arctic Circle in Severomorsk, Saturday, featuring Russia’s newest nuclear submarine the Borei-class ‘Vladimir Monomakh.’ Anti-submarine vessel the 'Admiral Levchenko' fired blank rounds to start proceedings at 11:30 local time before the Commander of the Northern Fleet Admiral Vladimir Korolev addressed hundreds of sailors, soldiers and veterans praising them for their service to their homeland. The naval parade took place in waters off the Kola Peninsula while helicopters and planes flew in the skies above. Altogether 11 aircraft and 10 ships and submarines took part in the commemorative events. Armed with 16 RSM-56 'Bulava' submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs), the Vladimir Monomakh is the third submarine in the Borei class. It boasts six 533 mm torpedo tubes, as well as RPK-2 'Viyuga' cruise missiles. A Borei-class sub is 170 metres (558 feet) long and 13.5 metres (44.2 feet) wide, and can dive up to 450 metres (1,476 ft). It features a compact, hydro-dynamically efficient hull for reduced broadband noise and is the first Russian submarine to use pump-jet propulsion. The submarine is named 'Vladimir Monomakh' after the former Grand Duke of Kievan Rus'. The hull of the Akula-class submarine, the K-480 'Ak Bars,' was used in its construction.
