Moscow will "continue to anxiously observe the deteriorating situation of media freedom in Turkey," Russia's Foreign Ministry spokesperson said, speaking from Moscow on Thursday.
Maria Zakharova said that the issue of press freedom in Turkey "is not only about Russia" after the Bureau Chief of Sputnik Turkey was prevened from entering the country by Turkish authorities.
She pointed to how "not only Turkish and Russian journalists, but also journalists, public figures and publicists from European countries are being persecuted and intimidated."
Despite this, "we see zero pressure on this country by EU countries" while "we hear that it is necessary to assist Turkey over issues of integration, as well as on issues of the visa-free regime and so on," she stated.
"In other words, Turkey is being rewarded for something that other countries are punished for. This situation is incredible" she added.
She continued, "I would like to ask what kind of instruments are used by the [Turkish] authorities to bend to its will leading European politicians?"
Turkey blocked the website of the Russian news outlet Sputnik this week, around the same time the Bureau Chief, Tural Kerimov, was prevented from entering the country.
