Zwygart family farm offers cow therapy sessions in Tenniken, canton of Basel-Country, allowing people to forget about the everyday stresses of daily life, Saturday.
The cow’s passive and calm nature, according to their owner Sibylle, make them perfect to allow people to escape their stressful lives and relax during the sessions, patting and cuddling the cows.
The idea arrived to Sibylle after a cow gave birth to three triplets, a male and two females. The two females were 95 percent infertile; therefore her father deemed the cows for slaughter. However Sibylle saved the young calves Svea, Sven and Svenja by coming up with the novel idea of cow cuddling therapy, inspired by a similar initiative in the Netherlands, ensuring that the cows veterinary bills were covered.
During the sessions visitors are initially first taught about the animals, how to clean them, in order to ensure that both the animal and person are comfortable. Sibylle added, "It is a great possibility to show the kids, how a farm is working, or that the milk comes from the cows and that the cows can be even more that just our milk and food producers." The sessions last for two hours and cost 50$ (47€).
