Members of Queens Muslim community gathered near the Al-Furqan Jame Masjid Mosque in Ozone Park in Queens, New York on Saturday, after the mosque's Imam and an assistant were shot and killed at close range in a suspected hate crime murder.
Members of the local Muslim community denounced the killing as a hate crime and blamed the murder on the rise in recent anti-Muslim rhetoric in the United States. Crowds chanted "we want justice" with one local resident stating that "the media is saying it's a robbery. It's not a robbery. It's a hate crime."
Imam Alala Uddin Akongi, a married father of three, and his assistant Thara Uddin, were walking home after leaving the mosque when they were shot in the head at close range around 14:00 local time (19:00 GMT). Alala Uddin Akongi died at the scene, while Thara Uddin succumbed to his wounds at hospital around four hours later.
According to the police, the gunman, described as a tall Hispanic male, carrying a large handgun and wearing short pants and a blue shirt, is still at large. Police are still investigating whether the double murder was a hate crime.
