Russian President Vladimir Putin criticised the US’ deployment of air defence system to Romania, during a meeting with Russia’s country’s top military officers and officials in Sochi, Friday.
"The latest events show that the situation has not improved. Unfortunately, it is deteriorating. I am referring to the setting-up of a radio detecting and ranging station in Romania as one of the elements of the United States challenging air defence system," Putin said, before adding "This is not a defence system. This is the part of the nuclear strategic potential of the United States placed on the periphery. In this case, the periphery is in Eastern Europe."
Condemning the decision further, Putin commented "The launching platforms that will be deployed after activation of the radar station in Romania, the launching platforms will be deployed also in Poland. They can easily be used for the deployment of intermediate and short range ballistic missiles."
During the meeting, the Russian President stated as well that "All our opponents were saying unanimously that air defence system is necessary to our western partners, in Europe and in the United States in order to prevent missile and nuclear threats from Iran. Where are these nuclear threats from Iran? There are no threats.”
Putin went on to state that "The deployment of the Aegis system in the Mediterranean, a radar in Romania and later a missile defence site in Poland - those are additional steps to undermine the global security system and to launch a new arms race," adding that Russia will not be part of that race by saying "As we have said before we will not be dragged into this race."
Today's meeting was the last meeting in a series of briefings dedicated to the development of the domestic defence industry. The president has been holding the working meetings with the top defence and military officials from Tuesday.
