Volcanic activity continued to escalate at Sicily’s Mount Etna, Wednesday, with reports of an increase in tremors and Strombolian eruptions. Specialists reported that Etna’s current behaviour matches past episodes, including last February where the volcano erupted violently, producing large lava flows and fountaining. Mount Etna is an active stratovolcano on Sicily’s east coast. At 3,329 m (10,922 ft) high, Etna is the tallest active volcano in Europe. It dwarfs Italy’s next largest volcano, Mount Vesuvius, standing nearly two and a half times taller. One of the most active volcanos in the world, Etna remains in a state of almost constant activity, with its current eruption beginning in 2013 and continuing to the present day.
