Three rescued young grey seals were taken in aviaries in St. Petersburg on Wednesday to prepare them for the life in the wild. The trio were discovered when they were still pups in March, in a state of exhaustion in which they could hardly move. For the last seven weeks they have been rehabilitated, growing accustomed to humans. However, their next stage of development will mean they see hardly any humans, before finally going into the wild, where human contact is best avoided. Seals swimming up the Neva River from the Gulf of Finland are quite common in St. Petersburg. The unfavourably warm weather conditions often encouraged them to return to the sea but some occasionally need to be rescued.
