Drone footage of the age-old town of Balestrino looking wilder than ever emerged on Wednesday, more than 60 years after it was abandoned due to earthquakes. 70 km (40 miles) south east of Genoa, the town - which features a picturesque castle sitting at its peak - is considered to be the most famous abandoned location in Italy. Balestrino dates back to 11th century A.D. and once hosted around 800 inhabitants. At the end of the 19th century however, a number of earthquakes caused severe damages to the town's infrastructure. The remaining population moved out in 1953 and a new town with the same name was built about a mile (1.6 kilometres) further away. Folklore suggests the town is haunted.
