The Russian Soyuz-2.1a rocket was successfully launched from the Vostochny Cosmodrome, the first launch from the venue, Thursday, after a 24-hour delay. The rocket will put three satellites into orbit, the Aist-2D, the SamSat-218 and the Lomonosov after they detached from the rocket around eight minutes and 44 seconds into the flight.
Russian President Vladimir Putin was at the scene to watch the launch after he visited the cosmodrome on Wednesday in order to personally investigate the reasons for the delay of the launch, while also commenting on possible criminal investigations related to the space port's construction.
During his Wednesday press conference, Putin announced to assembled workers and contractors that six criminal cases have been opened and four people have been arrested in connection with possible crimes during the construction of the Vostochny Cosmodrome. He went on to warn of prison sentences for two additional suspects currently under house arrest, saying "two of them are under house arrest, but, if they are found guilty, they will leave a warm bed and go to a prison cell, I do not doubt this."
