The New Brighton Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) managed to save ten-year-old golden retriever Martha after she was swept out to sea along with her owner on a Leasowe beach, Wednesday. The pair are said to have been surprised by the strong tide. The RNLI lifeboat was launched after a failed rescue attempt by the owner and the coastguard reporting a person and a dog in the water. Martha was drifting 0.8 km (0.5 miles) from the shore when the rescuers found her being rapidly swept further out. They eventually managed to pull Martha out by the collar; the dog was cold and shivering according to RNLI staff. Martha was welcomed by her relieved owner at the lifeboat station. The RNLI stressed the importance of walkers taking note of the times of the tides in order to prevent occurrences like this from happening in the future.
