Born with a large birthmark on her face, Mariana Mendes proudly flaunted her natural beauty at a modelling shoot in Patos de Minas, Wednesday. Hailing from a small town in the state of Minas Gerais, Mendes has recently started catching the attention of modelling agencies.
The nevus covers the middle of her face and part of her right cheek and is often confused for a facial tattoo. She was aged just five when she underwent laser treatment to reduce the birthmark after her mother feared she would be bullied.
The 24-year-old has been told her birthmark looks ugly and odd but has refused to let it get in the way of her dreams of becoming a model. She now hopes to inspire others to embrace their differences. "This will show that people with birthmarks don't have to be criticised or judged, which makes them feel excluded from society," Mendes said. "I received lots of messages on social media with people thanking me for having helped them to accept themselves."
