Macedonian special forces soldiers were watched by refugees from Idomeni, on the Greek side of the Macedonia-Greece border crossing, as they were flown in by helicopter to tackle renewed refugee protests on Tuesday.
The Macedonian army was drafted in after refugees, most of them from the Middle East, broke through a border gate and attempted to push their way across the northern Greek border and through into Macedonia. Macedonian riot police quelled the protests with tear gas and stun grenades, leaving at least 22 migrants including 12 children injured.
European, Mediterranean, and Balkan authorities are all struggling to cope with the intensifying crisis along the 'Balkan' refugee trail. Emergency refugee centres have been erected in Greece, where nearly 7000 migrants are stranded in Idomeni following Macedonia's decision to close its border.
Macedonian authorities have in turn blamed Austria, which ten days ago imposed a cap on the number of refugees it will allow entrance to daily, for the bottleneck. European leaders are set to discuss the refugee crisis in an effort to find a resolution at a summit next Monday.
