Head the Russian General Staff's Military Academy Colonel-General Sergei Makarov criticised the European Union, the US and NATO and their impact on international security during the Moscow International Conference on Security at the Radisson Royal Hotel in the Russian capital, Thursday.
According to Makarov, "NATO expansion to the East made it necessary for Russia to take steps to ensure its security." He called out "the deployment of missile defence installations and nuke extensions in Eastern Europe despite declarations, turning a blind eye to the glorification of Nazism in the Baltic states and Ukraine and frequent attempts to falsify history, the rhetoric of certain European leaders with respect to Russia," saying that these are "already described as Cold War 2.0."
Makarov said that the idea of a common European home helped overcome obscurity in Europe, but was not fully implemented and the common security system is currently in crisis for a variety of reasons. "The biggest problem in our opinion is having double standards in assessing different conflicts and being unable to influence the policies of the United States," Makarov said.
Makarov emphasised that a solution to the global security problem is to join together. "Joint efforts will produce new system of European security that would work for everybody." He went on to say that in order to set up such a system, all the world powers should be involved, adding "but the United States should not play an excessive role in Europe and in the world."
The fifth International Conference on Security runs in Moscow until April 28. The event brings together more than 500 high-ranking Russian and international politicians from at least 80 countries including three deputy prime ministers, 20 defence ministers, 15 chiefs of staff, 10 international organisations and military delegations. The fight against international terrorism, security issues in the Asia-Pacific, the Middle East and the European regions as well as military cooperation are expected to top the agenda of this year's conference.
