Chapecoense club president, Dandro Pallaoro and the team's chairman, Gelson Dalla Costa gave the first press conference since the majority of the team were killed in a plane crash, in Arena Conda, Chapeco on Wednesday.
"We all need support to rebuild our team" club president Sandro Pallaoro told press, "All values we had will have to be built from zero."
Most of the team's players were killed on their way to the Copa Sudamericana tournament when a British Aerospace 146 plane went down. The aircraft reportedly experienced electrical failures between Santa Cruz, Bolivia, and Medellin and subsequently crashed into a mountainside, killing 71 people on board. Six survivors were brought to local hospitals, where they are being treated for their injuries.
Goal keeper Jose Nivaldo Martins Constante, better known simply as 'Nivaldo', did not travel with his team mates as he had intended to play his 300th game at home. He announced that he would not play the next game and in fact retire from football 24 hours after the plan crash.
A wake is planned to take place at the stadium on Saturday, even if it cannot be guaranteed that the bodies of the deceased will have been returned by then. Atletico Nacional, who were supposed to play against Chapecoense in the Copa Sudamericana finals in Medellin, requested the tournament cup be awarded to the Brazilian side as a tribute to the deceased.
