Hundreds of navy sailors attended traditional Easter mass at the Kronstadt Naval Cathedral, Saturday. The service runs into the early hours of Sunday morning.
The Commander in Chief of the Russian Navy Vladimir Korolev stated that “historically for the last centuries Russian Navy is strongly connected with the Russian Orthodox Church.” “Sailors are deeply faithful, and of course their faith help them to solve important tasks and to serve at sea,” – he added.
The holy fire arrived in Kronstadt on Saturday after being lit earlier in the day by the patriarch in Jerusalem. Lamps lit from the flame also lit up dozens of other Russian cities and Orthodox churches abroad, including Moscow, Tallinn, London, and Riga. The holy fire has been brought to Russia from Jerusalem every year since 2003.
