The zero-fuel airplane Solar Impulse 2 (Si2) landed in Abu Dhabi, on Tuesday, with balloonist Bertrand Piccard at the controls, completing its final flight around the world, which began in March 2015 at the same location.
The aircraft, powered by the sun’s energy, has flown over 35,000 km, across all continents. The plane has a wingspan of 72 metres (236 feet), which is wider than a 747 jumbo jet; but it weighs only 2.3 tonnes.
Bertrand Piccard and co-founder of Solar Impulse Andre Borschberg wanted to demonstrate the possibilities of solar energy, which could drastically reduce the world’s carbon emissions.
The Swiss scientist and balloonist, Piccard, was greeted by applause from his the Solar Impulse team back in Monaco. He was welcomed by his fellow pilot and Prince Albert of Monaco in Abu Dhabi.
