Russian citizen Konstantin Zhuravlev, who was captured in 2013 by rebel militiamen in Syria, was safely returned to Russia, where he was reunited with his family at an undisclosed location on Friday.
Zhuravlev was reportedly captured by the al-Tawhid Brigade in early October 2013, while hitchhiking from Turkey to the eastern Sahara through Syria.
The group claimed that they had caught a Russian spy who was working for the Syrian government and posted pictures of his passport on the Internet.
Both claims were dismissed as Zhuravlev apparently does not speak Arabic and was already well-known having delivered a TEDx lecture on some of his adventures.
