Footage footage released on Friday shows an enormous 207 carat diamond, the size of a tennis table ball, unearthed by Russian miners at the Zarnitsa pipe located in the Sakha Republic last week. The diamond is believed to be approximately three million years old and is one of the largest diamonds ever found in the area.
Russia's ALROSA mining company discovered the huge stone on May 16, which company experts say could be worth several millions of dollars. Svetlana Gergenova from ALROSA's Diamond Sorting Centre, stated that "the uncut diamond has a mass of 207 carats and a diameter of approximate four centimetres."
ALROSA is the leading diamond mining company in Russia and is no stranger to big finds. A year ago the company found a 76 carat stone which had an estimated value of $430,000 (€385,000). Large diamonds are usually either sold to the State Depository for Precious Metals or go under the hammer at auctions.
