Representatives of Catalan civil, cultural and political organisations held a summit in Barcelona, Friday, to discuss the preparations for the breakaway region's independence referendum, which is due to take place in September 2017.
The attendees committed to setting up a campaign to promote the referendum within Spain and internationally, despite legal obstacles and the opposition of Spain's central government.
In November, Catalan lawmakers in Barcelona began a process for seeking secession from Spain, with the aim of achieving political independence by 2017, despite strong opposition from Madrid. In a vote held in the Catalan parliament on 9 November, 72 parliamentarians voted in favour of the resolution for secession from Spain, with only 63 voting against. The Spanish Supreme Court has reportedly opened more than 400 judicial proceedings in relation to the pro-independence vote.
