30.04.2015
National Guard troops were spotted outside Baltimore's Mondawmin Mall on Wednesday, after protests continued to sweep the city the day before. Around 15 Humvees are used to patrol the mall, a previous hot spot for clashes during the protests. The shopping centre lies within a mile from where Freddie Gray was arrested before dying in police custody. Violence broke out on Monday April 27, just hours after the funeral of 25-year-old Freddie Gray, who died in police custody on April 19, 2015. Gray's family say he suffered a severe spinal injury, that his voice box was crushed and his neck was snapped before he went into a coma and died. Police reports indicate that these injuries were sustained after his arrest. Reacting to the heavy unrest Baltimore authorities declared a state-of-emergency, calling in the National Guard, who and imposing a week-long curfew on the city.
