The UN Security Council voted in favour of imposing new sanctions on North Korea at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City, Saturday, in reaction to the country's recent missile tests.
The sanctions will be placed on several of North Korea's exports including coal, iron, iron ore, lead, lead ore and seafood.
Speaking at the meeting, US envoy to the UN Nikki Haley said the vote marked a "strong, united step towards holding North Korea accountable for its behaviour." She went on to praise China for "the important contributions" the country had made to the resolution.
Russia also supported the sanctions, with UN envoy Vasily Nebenzya referred to the DPRK's missile and nuclear programmes as unacceptable. However, he added that "All must understand that progress towards the denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula will be difficult so long as the DPRK perceives a direct threat to their security for that is how the North Koreans view the military build-up in the region."
