Belgium: Merkel says EU leaders in shock after deadly Istanbul airport attack

German Chancellor Angela Merkel announced that herself and the other EU leaders taking part in the European Council meeting in Brussels, in the early hours of Wednesday morning, were shocked by the deadly attack on Istanbul Ataturk Airport, offering her condolences to the victims.
“For the past few months Turkey has been attacked again and again. It has been a horrific series of attack against Turkey, and in this hour I particularly remember German tourists who became victims of such an attack in January,” said Merkel.
“Our deepest sympathies go to the victims of this attack, to their relatives and to those who were injured. I would like to tell Turkish people that we stand by their side in this fight against terrorism, and that we want to express our solidarity with them,” she added.
Gunfire and two explosions tore through the city's airport on Tuesday evening, killing at least 36 people and injuring an additional 147 people, according to Turkish Justice Minister Bekir Bozdag.
Eyewitnesses and CCTV have confirmed that two attacks were launched at . One involved explosions by a security point at an entrance to the terminal building, thought to be carried out by two individuals. The other allegedly involved a man walked into the terminal building from an airport car park, where he was gunned down by police. Reports suggest that all three attackers exploded suicide vests.
No one has yet claimed the attack.
The attack comes as Merkel was leaving the following the first day of a European Council emergency meeting to discuss Britain's Brexit. The meeting was attended by President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz, President of the European Council Donald Tusk and President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker, alongside the 27 heads of the EU member states.
Now in the second day of a two-day meeting, the leaders are discussing the consequences of Brexit for the EU; how remaining EU members should regroup following the news; and the potential penalties for the UK following the vote, among other matters.
