Russia’s Defence Ministry released footage on Thursday showing Russian Aerospace Forces launching long-range strikes against positions of the al-Nusra Front and the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS; formerly ISIS/ISIL).
The planes took off from an unidentified air base in Russia and were refuelled twice en route to the Mediterranean Sea from where they launched cruise missiles.
The strikes destroyed militant ammunition depots, a plant for the production of weapons, and control posts, the Defence Ministry said. Afterwards the aircraft returned safely to Russian territory.
In conjunction, Sukhoi Su-33 fighters also conducted air strikes, taking off from the Admiral Kuznetsov aircraft carrier, also in the Mediterranean.
A third air wing was launched from warplanes based at the Hmeymim airfield in Syria’s Latakia Province.
The Admiral Kuznetsov started participating in the Syrian campaign earlier this week, with the first sorties conducted on Tuesday.
