Queen Elizabeth II attended the formal initiation of the fifth session of the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh on Saturday, a week following the UK population's referendum vote to leave the European Union.
While not commenting openly on the Brexit referendum result or Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon's statements on a potential second Scottish independence referendum, the Queen stated "we all live and work in an increasingly complex and demanding world, where events and developments can, and do, take place at remarkable speed. And retaining the ability to stay calm and collected can at times be hard."
The Scottish First Minister Sturgeon then took to the stage, underlining the Scottish population's diverse backgrounds, stating "all of us have been given the precious opportunity to contribute to building a better country, and build it we will."
Sturgeon added that in order to do so, the Scottish parliament had to be bold and ambitious, while showing courage and determination. "Our collective commitment to the people of Scotland today is that we will not shy away from any challenge we face, no matter how difficult or deep-rooted", concluded Sturgeon.
