An estimated seven thousand people braved sub zero temperatures in central Ulaanbaatar on Saturday to make a stand against the government's failure to improve the capital's toxic air conditions.
Demonstrators were clad in warm clothing and armed with black balloons and protest banners. Many also wore masks.
According to UNICEF, Mongolia's capital is one of the 10 most polluted cities in the world. The population is heavily dependent upon burning fossil fuels and other materials for cooking and heating.
Ulaanbaatar is frequented by smog, and levels of pollution have been known to reach 30 times above levels considered safe in some districts. Children living in areas that are highly polluted are at greater risk of chronic respiratory diseases as they breathe in more dangerous fumes.
