Renowned Cuban cigar roller Jose Castelar broke a world record by rolling a 90-metre-long (298 ft) tobacco cigar in front of the British Embassy in Havana, Friday. Castelar dedicated the cigar to the former president, Fidel Castro, on the eve of his 90th birthday.
After 10 days of hard work, Castelar reached a new accomplishment in his career full of world records and rolled the last few centimeters of the cigar in front of onlookers, tourists and the press. Castelar cut off the cigar exactly at 90 metres long to honour Castro's 90th birthday, although he rolled almost a metre more.
For the making of the giant cigar, Castelar used around 80 kilograms (176 lbs) of dry tobacco leaves from Pinar del Rio, west of Havana, where the famous and aromatic plant is cultivated. A team of 100 collaborators including a physiotherapist helped the cigar roller accomplish this new feat in the vaults of the fortress of San Carlos de la Cabana in Havana.
His previous Guinness Record of 81 metres and 80 centimetres (268.3 ft) was established in 2011. Castelar began setting Guinness world records in 2001.
