Water recycling company, West Basin showed off their solution to southern California's never-ending drought crisis; treating sewage water for human consumption, in Los Angeles on Monday. The 'toilet to tap' solution, as its come to be known, is not to everyone's taste however California's politicians are increasingly looking to the technology as an option to guarantee long-term water supply. Shivaji Deshmukh, West Basin's Assistant General Manager, heralded the process, stating "whether or not there's imported water available for us, we always have recycled water." The water originally is sourced from local's home sinks, washing machines or toilets. From there the liquid is put through a microfiltration plant, where it is cleaned and purified. Next up, the water is treated to bit of reverse osmosis, where the water is once again purified of viruses, dissolved materials and other organic compounds. The final step involves adding Hydrogen peroxide to the water before exposing it to high intensity UV light; cleansing the water once again. The process uses the same technology as on the International Space Station, where the crew's urine is recycled to produce water for coffee.
