Dinko Vulev, a Bulgarian vigilante helping the border police to catch "illegal" migrants, explained his actions in an interview conducted near his hometown of Yambol on Saturday.
"I actually do this because of patriotism," he said.
Vulev claims that he encountered a group of migrants while out driving his All Terrain Vehicle (ATV) with a friend. After he alleges he was attacked by the migrants, he has conducted raids on his own and with others to hunt down migrants entering southeastern Bulgaria without proper authorisation.
Thousands of desperate refugees have entered Bulgaria over the past year fleeing conflicts in the Middle East, with the intention of reaching asylum in northwestern Europe.
