A Russo-American convoy left Naples, Florida on Saturday, as part of a mass road trip to Washington, DC to celebrate the 70th anniversary of Elbe day, a crucial moment during World War II when Russian and American forces came together, hastening the end of the five year international conflict. Made up of five cars, three trucks and six motorbikes, Miami is the first stop on the 1500 mile (2414km) journey for the convoy. The convoy, organised by the Russian-American Centre of Florida, will later move to Oregon, carrying on throughout the country until they reach the US capital on April 24, one day before Elbe day. The event is celebrated throughout former-Soviet Union nations to mark the date that Soviet soldiers, advancing from the east, and American troops from the West met at the River Elbe near Torgau in Germany, signifying a decisive divide in the German army and major step in defeating the Third Reich.
