Russian military sappers and their trained sniffer dogs continued the mine clearance of the city of Palmyra in Syria on Thursday. The dogs, which can detect mines, can work for 25 minutes before they need water and rest.
The mine clearance operation began in Palmyra started after Russian President Vladimir Putin, along with the Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad and the Head of UNESCO Irina Bokova agreed that Russian servicemen will take part in the clearance of the city and the surrounding area, where the world heritage site is located.
