Germany: Merkel leads CDU rally ahead of regional elections

German Chancellor Angela Merkel addressed supporters at a Christian Democratic Union of Germany (CDU) party campaign rally in Pirmasens, Monday, ahead of the 2016 Rhineland-Palatinate state elections.
Outside the venue around hundred supporters of the right-wing National Democratic Party of Germany (NPD) staged an anti-refugee protest, blaming Merkel of mismanaging the refugee crisis. Police presence was heightened due to a pro-refugee counter-protest taking place at the same time.
