Vote Leave campaigners waited in anticipation for a forecasted victory, in Manchester, early on Friday morning, where finals result of the UK’s referendum on their continued membership of the EU is set to be officially announced. There were scenes of jubilation from Leave campaigners, who expect a win after 88.8% of votes have been declared.
Opinion polls have flip-flopped between both sides for the duration of the campaign. After pro-Remain Labour MP Jo Cox was murdered, the Remain campaign looked to have an edge on the 'Brexit' campaigners; however, early referendum night reports show the Leave campaign to have clinched a win, 52% to 48%, with only 11.2% of votes left to report.
There is mounting pressure on Prime Minister David Cameron to resign as leader of the Conservative Party in the wake of the result, after he campaigned to remain part of the European Union. He is expected to make a statement later this morning.
