Around 2,000 silver coins used 950 years ago are exhibited in the museum of Lebus, close to the German-Polish border. Last October, an archaeologist and volunteer officer of the Office for memorial service in Brandenburg, Frank Slawinski, found them and now they are available for visitors to see.
The true value of the treasure is still not defined. Historians suppose that the coins were hidden on purpose as some old fabric and a broken vase were found with them. At the moment, some of the coins have been displayed for the first time in the small museum "House of Lebus country" in Lebus. Many visitors came to see the unique treasure with their own eyes.
The archeologist and volunteer, Frank Slawinski, started his research activity a long time ago. He spends time researching possible spots for historic treasures and on 25 weekends a year he walks around nature with his metal detector to investigate promising spots. Last fall he made a rare discovery of more than 2,000 silver coins that date back at least 950 years. He said that he as a volunteer “has to right for remuneration ... It is a small competition between colleagues who gets the next spectacular find."
