Several opposition MPs were injured in a violent brawl in Macedonian parliament in Skopje, Thursday, after scores of pro-government nationalist protesters stormed the building in a bid to halt them from forming a new government.
The protesters threw camera tripods and other makeshift projectiles at opposition MPs. Leader of the opposition Social Democratic Union of Macedonia (SDSM) Zoran Zaev was left bloodied, alongside SDSM Secretary General Oliver Spasovski and party members Damjan Manchevski and Maksim Dimitrievski.
Earlier on Thursday, opposition MPs elected Talat Xhaferi, of the ethnic Albanian Democratic Union for Integration (DUI) Party, as president of the country's parliament, considered to be a decisive step in allowing parliament to form a new government.
The latest wave of pro-government protests follows a two year-long period of anti-government demonstrations, which resulted in elections in December 2016. Despite the successful conclusion of the election process, the country is still without a new government and parliament, as the parties are still struggling to form coalitions.
