Haunting drone footage captured the crumbling infrastructure of an abandoned Chernobyl-era nuclear power plant in Crimea, Thursday. Construction on the plant started in 1975 in a bid to supply energy to the whole peninsula, but the project was finally abandoned in 1989, three years after the disaster at Ukraine's Chernobyl nuclear power plant. The Chernobyl catastrophe put an end to the plant's construction as the Crimean station was built along the same lines. Initial costs of the clear up project were estimated at 18 billion rubles (the equivalent of US$18 billion at the time) according to former President of the Soviet Union Mikhail Gorbachev, leaving little funds and less incentive for further power plant construction. For the past 26 years the station has been slowly decaying, still managing to retain many of its distinguishing features including the main energy block and cooling system. The station is popular among adventurers and while radioactive fuel was never delivered to the plant, it remains dangerous due to its crumbling infrastructure.
