The entire population of Fort McMurray was forced to evacuate on Wednesday, as authorities struggled to contain the massive wildfire that broke out south-west of the city on Sunday.
An estimated 88,000 residents have had to flee their homes and businesses since the fire entered city limits on Tuesday. At least 1,600 structures have been burned down by the blaze which has spread over an area of 18,500 acres (7,500 hectares) since Sunday. Firefighters have struggled to contain the wildfire due to strong, dry winds. No injuries have been reported.
Speaking to reporters in Ottawa earlier on Wednesday, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau confirmed that the federal government was responding to the wildfire and had mobilised a number of military aircraft to assist authorities in Alberta.
