Leaders of the European Union (EU) countries arrived at the Justus Lipsius building in Brussels, Thursday, to attend a two-day European Council session, which is expected to finalise an agreement with Turkey on ending the refugee crisis.
"We will have intense consultations to find a balance among the interests of the member states of the European Union and Turkey. We will firstly consult among the twenty-eight and see how we can reach a common decision," noted German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
"We should have a guarantee that Turkey will organise this in a fair manner and also consider human rights because we must respect asylum rights," stated French President Francois Hollande.
European leaders are set to meet with representatives from Turkey to ratify a controversial deal regarding a common refugee policy. The United Nations has expressed concern over the legality of the deal and the potential damage to human rights the deal may entail.
The deal stipulates that one Syrian refugee be resettled in the EU for every Syrian refugee returned to Turkey, while aid from the EU to Turkey for handling the refugee crisis will be doubled from three to six billion euros. The EU also agreed to accelerate the visa liberalisation deal with Turkey, as well as speed up Turkey's EU accession negotiations.
