Poland: Thousands of feminists protest possible ban on abortion

Thousands of feminist activists and their supporters marched through the city of Lodz in protest against the tightening of abortion laws and possible full ban on abortion, Saturday.
Poland's current abortion laws, which have been in force since 1993, are among the strictest in Europe. The organisers protested not only against a complete ban, which they see as highly politicised, but also current regulations.
Earlier the Polish Catholic Church Episcopate called on parliamentarians to vote for a full ban on abortion and Prime Minister Beata Szydlo stated that she was in favour of a ban. At present, abortions are only permitted when the mother's life is in danger, in cases of rape or incest or if the foetus has medical deformities.
More than 10,000 people participated in the same protest in Warsaw earlier in April. Pro-abortion protests are the latest in a series of anti-government demonstrations to have taken place in Poland since the Law and Justice Party won the most recent parliamentary elections.
