The Russian universal 'Burlak' vehicle and eight crew members of the Automobile Transarctic Expedition team staged their first test drive on the frozen Kara Sea, as shown by footage released on Tuesday.
The off-roader is a self-assembled vehicle fashioned out of a Soviet-era BTR-60 armoured personnel carrier.
The expedition crew drove from Inta to Vorkuta in Komi Republic, beginning on March 19 and planned to be on road for 31 days, but decided to finish their trip five days early after the vehicle was deemed to have passed the tests. The aim of the test drive was to test the abilities of the vehicle and examine the preparation level for the bigger expedition.
'Burlak' proved its quality while overcoming deep snow, mud, mountain trails, and deep and icy waters of the Kara Sea. It is able to drive in the water, to overcome snow heaps and manoeuvre between ice blocks. After the test, the crew did not find any major damages.
The crew hope to drive to the North Pole in 2018.
