US President Donald Trump stated the US and China agree that a 'freeze-for-freeze' agreement with North Korea would not be acceptable, when speaking at a press conference in Washington D.C., Wednesday.'
Trump was referring to the so-called "freeze-for-freeze' deal, which was put forth by Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin in July in a bid to alleviate escalating tensions with the DPRK. Under the accord, North Korea would freeze its nuclear programme in exchange for the US and South Korea suspending joint military exercises.
According to Trump, the Chinese leader recognizes that a nuclear North Korea is a "grave threat" and that both Washington and Beijing "agree that we would not accept a so-called 'freeze-for-freeze' agreement, like those that have consistently failed in the past."
Trump also stressed that "a de-nuclearised Korean Peninsula" is the common goal of the US and China. He went on to say that "time is running out" and that the US has made clear "all options remain on the table."
Commenting on his meeting with South Korean President Moon Jae-in, Trump said, "together we reaffirmed our commitment to a campaign of maximum pressure [on North Korea]. Like Japan, South Korea is increasing its defence contributions."
