22.04.2016
US President Barack Obama and British Prime Minister David Cameron held a joint press conference in London, Friday.
Obama said that in his opinion, "there is no need for ground troops" in Libya, but that the US is ready to provide training and expertise, so that the new unity government can "get basic services to their citizens and build up legitimacy." He underlined the importance of preventing the spread of Islamic State militants to Libyan territory.
He also outlined his view of the Syria ceasefire agreement, saying he had observed "a significant reduction of violence in that country ... The cessation of hostilities actually held longer than I expected." Obama said the US and UK will "try to get the moderate opposition to stay at the negotiating table in Geneva" and "support those who are prepared to fight ISIL." According to the US President, the conflict cannot be resolved by a "military victory."
Obama's arrival in the UK has garnered controversy after the US president wrote a comment piece in 'The Telegraph' in which he urged the UK to remain in the European Union. Members of the 'Vote Leave' campaign, including Mayor of London Boris Johnson, have criticised Obama for weighing in on the UK's EU referendum debate.
