A powerful earthquake of 7.9 magnitude rocked Kathmandu on Saturday, causing injuries and the collapse of centuries-old temples, buildings and homes. Among the landmarks left in ruins is Kathmandu's infamous Dharahara tower, where at least 50 people are believed to be trapped. Causalities and injuries are expected to be high, with Nepal's Home Ministry currently saying at least 71 people have been killed in the earthquake, although it is too early to estimate how high the figure will rise with local police already reporting that at least 108 people have lost their lives. According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the quake struck an area between Kathmandu and the city of Pokhara. Tremors were felt as far away as the Indian capital Delhi. Official data on the number of injuries and casualties have yet to emerge. According to eye-witnesses, however, a child was killed in a town near Kathmandu when a statue fell in a park. Another 15-year-old girl is also believed to be dead in India after the quake brought a house wall down. An avalanche was reportedly triggered in the Mount Everest region as well. The USGS previously rated the earthquake at 7.5 magnitude, but later upgraded the strength to 7.9. Aftershocks felt across the Indian subcontinent were reported to be at 6.6 and 5.1.
