Sumo wrestlers held up babies in an attempt to make them cry as part of the 400-year-old Naki Zumo festival, at the Kamitori Maekawa shrine in Yokohama, Tuesday. A mother of one of the competing babies, Mari Ichikawac said "my son got surprised by their loud voices, so he cried." Under the rules the wrestlers hold up their babies until they start wailing, if the baby fails to cry a referee enters the arena and attempts to scare them with traditional masks. Babies which cry at the event are thought to be healthy. Parents pay up $108 (€97) to participate. The ritual has traditionally been held at various temples and shrines for the past four centuries, coinciding with Japan's 'Children Day.'
