Footage released on Monday by New Zealand Police showed the moment a police dog named Thames was reunited with his handler Constable Mike Wakefield on Sunday, May 10, after spending seven nights missing in the Tararua Range. The four-year-old German Shepherd went missing the previous weekend during search and rescue training exercises in the mountain range. Wakefield, along with volunteer John McCann and Wairarapa search and rescue co-ordinator Senior Constable Tony Matheson, spent the whole week looking for Thames and had almost given up hope of finding the dog when they spotted fresh tracks near the mountain range's High Ridge on Saturday. The group followed the tracks before eventually finding Thames sheltering in some undergrowth. After being located, Thames, who is also the Wakefield family's beloved pet, was taken to the vet for a medical examination. After being given a clear bill of health by the vet Thames was awarded some much needed time of work to recoup following his ordeal. Video courtesy of the New Zealand Police.
