Russia defended itself on the second day of oral examinations in the International Court of Justice (ICJ) case between Ukraine and Russia at the Peace Palace in The Hague on Tuesday.
On Monday, Kiev requested the ICJ place provisional measures on Russia for the duration of their main case, in which Ukraine is asking the court to rule that Russia violated UN international conventions in Donbass and in the Crimean Peninsula.
Russia's defence attorneys pushed back against Ukraine's accusation that Russia is funding "terrorists" by explaining that indiscriminate shelling is occurring on both sides of the conflict.
Russian representative, Ilya Rogachev, said, "Let us be clear, most of the civilian casualties are in the DPR and LPR and multiple sources confirm that Ukrainian armed forces are themselves responsible for numerous acts of indiscriminate shelling."
In response to Kiev's demand that Russia pay compensation for Malaysia Airlines Flight 17, which was shot down in 2014, Russian representative, Sam Wordsworth, stated that there is no evidence that Russia provided weaponry to any party with the intent to shoot down a civilian aircraft.
"As to the appalling loss of life caused by the shooting down of flight MH17, there is no evidence before the court, plausible or otherwise, that Russia provided weaponry to any party with the intent or knowledge that such weaponry be used to shoot down a civilian aircraft", Wordsworth stated.
