The area around the Violin Museum in the northern Italian town of Cremona was cordoned off in a bid to avoid noise interfering with the recording of famous Stradivarius violins, footage from Thursday shows.
Thirty-two ultra-sensitive microphones installed in the auditorium of the Violin Museum are working to capture the sounds of the Stradivarius violins in a digital format.
The 'Bank of Sound' project was born from the idea of an Italian startup, Area Zone studios, that has the goal to make this intangible heritage available for the highest number of people in the world.
Area Zone decided to sample the unique sound of those instruments and make it available in a digital archive to ensure the purity, the conservation and the use for musicians who may not have the opportunity to listen or play a violin by Stradivari.
The town's administration has recently closed roads surrounding the museum to traffic, in a bid to avoid noise interfering with the recordings.
Cremona mayor Gianluca Galimberti has reportedly called on citizens to avoid sudden noises around the museum.
A Stradivarius is a string instrument created by the Stradivari family in the 17th and 18th century, with a reputation for extremely high quality.
Some of the instruments have fetched up to $15.9 million at auction.
