Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan suggested the idea of stripping Turkish citizenship from those who support "terrorist organisations," during a speech to a group of lawyers in Ankara on Tuesday.
"We need to be decisive, to take all necessary measures including stripping citizenship from supporters of terrorist organisations," he stated.
Turkish security forces have engaged in a counter-insurgency operation in the country's southeast since last July, when a fragile peace with the Kurdish separatist group the PKK (Kurdish Workers' Party) collapsed. The Turkish state considers the PKK a "terrorist organisation." On Monday, Erdogan said peace talks with the PKK remained out of the question.
Istanbul has also been targeted by two attacks since the beginning of the year, for which the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS; formerly ISIS/ISIL) has claimed responsibility.
